Motorist Tries to Kill Cyclists

On the last Friday of every month cyclists meet up to do group rides called Critical Mass. We're talking as few as 10 or as many as 1,000s. This past Friday in Brazil there was a Critical Mass which ended in tragedy. WARNING, this is hard to watch. If you got the stomach fast forward to 0:45. My thoughts are with those riders.

The dude that ran over those riders is claiming self defense. WTF? Here's an except of the article:

"The central bank official, Richard Neis, 47, who ran over dozens of cyclists in the Lower City , on Friday, was presented to the civil police around noon on Monday for questioning.

Neis came to call the Bureau of Crimes, Traffic accompanied by two lawyers and escorted by four policemen from the Special Operations Battalion (SOB). To escape the press, who waited in front of the building, he entered the parking lot.

According to the lawyer Luis Fernando Coimbra Albino, Neis plead self-defense of himself and his 15 year old son. The driver decided to come forward to say that plowed into the cyclists after feeling threatened by alleged coups against his black Golf."

Caught this on TOLA. Read the entire article here.

NAHBS 2011

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) just finished up over the weekend, and from browsing the numerous bike blogs covering the event it looked pretty epic. Below are the few that really caught my eye.

Manchester Track World Cup

2 of the 3 bike photos in yesterday's post were from the Manchester Track World Cup. Here's a short on the event. Pretty dope.

Sadly, Victoria Pendleton didn't come away with any wins.

TDC - LAFixed Training Ride

DSC_0134

First training ride in PV for Tour de Cure (TDC) coming up in May. We had the veterans, FNGs (google it), and some dudes running brakeless fixed. It was a solid group. No time wasted regrouping, just straight mashing up and down climbs.

Notables for the ride were the beautiful steel roadies that showed face.

Gios with Record.

Landshark with Record.

And my favorite of the day. YAMA-FUCKIN-GUCHI in a ridiculously stunning teal color with Force.

Contador Back

Dude had the Clenbuterol charges dropped.

Cliffnotes:
"According to a number of Spanish newspapers, the competitions committee decided to rethink its verdict on Friday last week based on article 296 of the UCI’s regulations, which says that an athlete can be exonerated if they prove that they had inadvertently ingested a banned product through no fault or negligence on their part."

Good look for the Spanish cycling competitions committee. They man'd up after they couldn't prove that the ingested drug had any real impact on Contador's cycling ability, even when Contador's lawyer team couldn't find the piece of alleged meat. This is good news for cycling. With Contador back, everyone's going to turn up the competition. 2011 pro tour season just got more exciting. Schleck bros about to lay the hurt (DA4LIFE).

Bicycle Transit Center in DC

Via Hype Mulroney.

This bicycle station in Washington DC houses 150 bikes outside the Union Station. For a small daily fee or membership dues you can park your bike here in a semi enclosed area. Long Beach also has something similar but not nearly was architecturally developed. What blew me away is how anti bike station it really is from the outside. From the looks alone, it can easily be mistaken as an art installation. Then when you read about how a bicycle wheel influenced the structural design, it just makes it so right.

Just cause it has a motor doesn't mean it's not a bike. Very well done video.

BCD Ramen Run

Via Mok's emailing/texting/facebooking/phone calling camera.

I had some free time last night so I decided to meet up LAFixed's BCD crew (Beach City Dash) for a little jaunt through the south bay and some ramen. What a sleeper of a route. Looking at the elevation map you see two major climbs, what you don't see are those baby rollers. Oh and that sharp spike around mile 12-13 was Anchovy. I've done half of it (the half before Western), but the other half (after Western) is no joke. Better come correct, because that hill will eat you alive.

Ended the night eating ramen at Koraku. Fun night and great company, definitely will try to make it out to more rides pending time.

Lopery MASH

The Donut Kang from Team Lope posted a recent photo of his MASH x Cinelli. That training wheel is definitely fitting, because only babies ride MASH x Cinellis.

VCR Teaser

LAFixed's VCR (Venice Chill Ride) handles a road ride every weekend dubbed VRR (Venice Road Ride). I've ridden with a couple of those dudes and they are stand up guys. Def fun company. With new kits and a camera crew in tow they filmed the ride. Excited to see the full length.

Bike Pr0n

Image via LAFixed's Bike Pr0n thread.

Talk about a hipster bike. Painted rear disc? Check. Risers? Check. Awkward seat angle? Check. Matching front aerospoke looking wheel? Check. All in good fun, this kid is stunting down the block. Big wheel what?

If this bike had a license plate it would read ICUH8IN.

Bikes of SF

I've been to a good amount of the Bay Area and it's all surprisingly and amusingly correct. Too bad the Lopery doesn't ride in Castro, because that'd be perfect.
